How can climate change become understandable

Sea-ice in greenland

The visualization of scientific data is technically challenging, especially concerning developments in sea ice concentration.

The Sea Ice Portal, developed by wiminno for the Alfred Wegener Institute, provides maps and diagrams that can be downloaded in high quality and used freely thanks to a Creative Commons license.

Interactive Feature for Satellite Streams On behalf of the AWI, wiminno has now implemented another interactive feature on meereisportal.de, which makes the melting of ice at both poles of our Earth understandable in a very comprehensible way.

By clicking on "Create your own animation", users can play a video of sea ice concentration in the Arctic or Antarctic online for any period of their choice. The dynamics and development of sea ice concentration over various time periods can be viewed, evaluated, and compared at different resolutions and speeds.

The available maps date back to June 2002.

The videos can be viewed online at multiple speeds (from single to tenfold) and downloaded in various resolutions (from 720 px to 2952 px). Through the animated, freely selectable time periods, changes and developments in sea ice concentration in the polar regions can be analyzed and compared.

The introduction of this new feature also came with a more user-friendly user interface in the "Maps & Graphics" section. Users now have much faster access to additional ice maps, yearly data, and trend analyses.

The Alfred Wegener Institute is convinced of the new features: "By introducing the possibility to quickly create custom animations for different time periods, the Alfred Wegener Institute has enriched the information offering with an important and unique feature. The optimization of the user interface in the area of maps and graphics also meets the feedback and needs of our users," explains Dr. Renate Treffeisen, lead scientist of Sea Ice Portal. "So our diverse information products are now easier and faster to find."
